Watch out for fake rice! How to recognize a synthetic product
Everyone knows that China is the world's leading producer of fakes, but they are used to associating it mainly with clothing, appliances, toys, cosmetics, etc. However, dishonest producers have already learned how to produce absolutely realistic food counterfeits, in particular, such a popular product on our table, like rice. But such a purchase is not just a waste of money, but also a direct blow to health! However, there are ways to recognize fake pic.
How to fake rice in China
In 2017, on the Internet, various videos and articles began to appear, exposing fraudsters who produce fake rice. They are mainly based on Chinese factories, although some videos were recorded in Vietnam. Tricky traders thought to save on the production of a popular product - not only popular in Asian countries, but also in Europe,- and not to wait for its cultivation and collection in rice paddies, but to produce cereal industrially with the help of plastic.
It should immediately be noted that fake rice is not made entirely of plastic, as it is trumpeted in many articles and videos on Youtube. The main product, due to which rice imitation became possible, is ordinary potato starch, which is cheaper and more harmful. Plastic in fake rice is added to the product, in fact, took the form of rice - it helps to form a “rice” and give it a rounded shape. And so that fake rice smells like real, it is treated with special flavored steam.
Also, do not confuse the video, which shows how to produce fake Chinese rice, and video where the Chinese produce white plastic granules for the production of bags, films, etc. From a distance, they look almost the same, but their purpose is completely different. No one is going to sell you raw materials for molds under the guise of cereals, so not all loud headlines can be trusted.
But the problem remains, and it’s not only that a person pays money for a completely different product.Even with a small, seemingly plastic content, this fake product still threatens human health. After all, as experts say, to eat a portion of porridge made of fake rice is about the same as eating a plastic bag. Even after the first "test" a person can seriously poison.Related article: Foods That Forged Most often
How to recognize a fake
However, not only Chinese fake rice can be found in the store. It is often impossible to identify the manufacturer by the barcode number, since the country where the product was just being packaged can put its numbers on the packaging. So, plastic rice comes across both in Indian and Russian packaging.
How to recognize a fake, if the goods are already purchased? There are four ways to do this:
- Water. Initially, plastic Chinese rice could be distinguished from the present by its ability to stick on the surface of the water. Real rice, as it is known, is sinking, although some dried rice and litter can go up, but fake usually pops up. But now there are cases when fake rice is successfully going to the bottom, therefore, it is not worth hoping for only this experiment.
- Appearance. This method does not always work either, but it's worth taking note. Take a good look at the purchase: real rice groats have rice of different sizes, and even their color is not quite uniform. And almost the same form of Risinok or the perfect white color definitely speaks of a fake.
- Heat treatment. Place the pre-soaked cereal in water in a bowl. Pour water into it, just above the level of rice, and put in the microwave for 4-5 minutes. If the rice is swollen and the water has completely evaporated, then the rice is most likely real. If the rice is still not ready, not boiled soft, and the water is still in the bowl, then it is better not to eat it - it is fake. Looking closely, you will even notice in this bowl, among the more believable rice, unusual pieces that look like translucent plates.
- The fire. Perhaps the surest way to determine a fake. If you try to set fire to real flakes with a cigarette lighter, they will slowly begin to char, but this will take time. If you throw them on a hot burner, then under the prolonged exposure of such a high temperature, they can even catch fire, like almost any organic material. But if you check the effect of fire on a fake, the difference will be obvious: synthetic rice will burn much faster, and most importantly, it will not begin to char, but to melt. The smell, too, will give a fake - when burning, you will feel the smell of plastic.
Now, knowing about the falsification of rice cereals, be careful and buy high-quality rice only from reputable manufacturers.
