How are kanzashi flowers with sharp and round petals

For 400 years, Japanese girls have decorated their hair with beautiful kanzashi hairpins. They must make kanzashi with their own hands or accept it as a gift, but only from a loved one. Ornaments in the form of flowers, birds and other elements have become an integral part of the cultural heritage of Japan. Wearing a kimono, girls create a special composition on their heads that complements the pattern on the clothes.

Japanese jewelery for Europeans

Previously, using kanzashi hairpins, it was possible to determine whether a woman is married, how many children she has, her financial situation. Modern Japanese women use kanzashi much less frequently than their ancestors did. Today, only Japanese geisha wear traditional Japanese attire. The rest of the girls decorate their hairstyles with the help of kanzashi, mainly at a wedding ceremony, when visiting a temple or on other holidays.

Girl with kanzashi flowers

Now hairpins with fabric flowers are popular not only in Japan, but also far beyond its borders.Many designers and couturiers borrowed the basics of kanzashi technology for their creations. Girls all over the world decorate hairstyles with hairpins of silk and plastic. Jewelry is sold in many stores, but kanzashi can be made with your own hands. There is nothing difficult in this, and it comes out much cheaper than buying it in a store.

We start making kanzashi

The full name of the hairpins with silk flowers is hana kanzashi or zumami kanzashi. The technique of their manufacture is simple, but requires care and perseverance.

You will need:

  • fabric - usually silk or satin is used for kanzashi, but for training it is better to take a simpler fabric, for example cotton. You can also use tape (width - 4 cm);
  • ruler, crayon or pencil, scissors to cut even squares;
  • a lighter or matches (in case you need to burn extra threads of fabric);
  • pin for silk;
  • tweezers to hold the finished petals;
  • strong thread;
  • glue (like "moment");
  • beads for decorating the core.

Decorations are created by folding silk rectangles. One rectangle - one petal.It is necessary to cut a square petal and fold, as shown in the diagram. This creates sharp flower petals.

Kanzashi - algorithm

In Figure 5, the line "a" defines the height and diagonal of the petal. By bending it inside, you can create a "tongue" of the flower. And if you cut, the flower is obtained with holes inside the petals, as in the picture below. If it is inconvenient to adjust the line and the petal falls apart, fix the edges with a pin or clip.

If the threads of the fabric peel off, the petal should be set on the edges. When all the petals are ready, they should be carefully strung on a thread and tighten. The thread is tied at the bottom. Beads or stones can be attached to the core of the flower with glue.

Having mastered these two techniques, you can do original kanzashi with your own hands.

The presented techniques can be combined. Often, on top of a layer with round petals, a layer of sharp ones is glued.The technique of creating kanzashi can be fully mastered in one day. For professionals, creating a flower with twenty petals takes about an hour.
