In which countries is the Creed sung?

What do you think, since when did the Creed become to be used as part of the Divine Liturgy? He so organically fits into the system of worship, helps believers to tune in to the adoption of the sacrament, which seems to be the way it has always been. But this is not entirely true.

The reading of the Creed was not immediately introduced into the Church. In antiquity, it was read only once a year - on Good Friday at the baptism of those read. At the end of 471, the Symbol of Faith was read in every liturgy in the Church of Antioch, and since 511 Patriarch Timofey started reading it in the Constantinople region. Why did he do that? It was rumored that he supported the heretics and the secret heretic himself. To demonstrate their commitment to Orthodoxy, the patriarch introduced such a reading.

At first it was only in Constantinople. Gradually spread further. In any case, when, after some time, the Symbol of Faith was attempted to be removed from the liturgy, the people became indignant. And for more than 1500 years, this prayer has been read at every liturgy.

In our church practice, the Creed is usually sung by everyone, and in the East it is usually read by one of the senior clerics or especially distinguished laymen. If present, but not a bishop, he usually reads this prayer; in monasteries, it is the prerogative of the abbot, who sometimes gives it to some honored guest or pilgrim (for example, a bishop or abbot of another monastery). In Constantinople, during the patriarchal ministry, the reading of the Creed is the privilege of the Great Logofet; at the bishop's liturgy (Jerusalem) at the Holy Sepulcher, this is done by the father of the skebophiliac of the Holy Sepulcher.

In the East, the custom of reading the Creed during the service spread very quickly. And how did he get into the worship of the western church?

In 589, they began to read him in Spain, 200 years later, Emperor Charlemagne ordered him to be read in churches under his lands. And Karl made an addition there, which we know under the name "filioque". (This translates from Latin as "and from the Son".) Such an addition was made in the part where it is said from whom the Holy Spirit emanates. In the Orthodox version: outgoing from the Father, in the Catholic: outgoing from the Father and the Son.)

In Rome, the Creed was not read until the XI century, and the popes as they could resist introducing the filioque into the prayer.

Finally, at the beginning of the eleventh century, the pope surrendered. In 1014, Henry II arrived in Rome from Germany for the coronation. He asked why "I Believe ..." is not performed for the liturgy. Yielding to the new emperor, Pope Benedict VIII included the Symbol of Faith in the composition of the Mass. As you might have guessed, this was the filioque version.

According to today's practice, Catholics sing the Symbol of Faith not for every mass, but only on Sundays and public holidays. In the Orthodox Church, he is sung or read at every liturgy.

In Russia, before the October Revolution, “I Believe ...” sang or choir, or read the deacon (if the liturgy was celebrated on a non-festive day). Therefore, composers, writers of spiritual hymns (P. I. Tchaikovsky, P. G. Chesnokov, A. T. Grechaninov, A. A. Arkhangelsky and A. D. Kastalsky) created truly wondrous images of “I Believe ...”, differing in each other. from friend.

The tradition of the congregational singing of the Symbol of Faith arose in Russia relatively recently, in the early years of the revolution, on the initiative of Patriarch Tikhon. This initiative was not accidental. The Nicene-Tsaregrad Symbol of Faith, according to the saint, should have remained in the memory of people in case they were deprived of everything, even the written text.Perhaps this helped many Christians during the years of the persecution of them by the Soviet authorities to keep in their memory the tenets of their fatherly faith.
