The best counterfeiter of the USSR

The best counterfeiter of the USSR

Viktor Baranov - criminal legend of the USSR. He can be safely called the king of counterfeiters of all times and peoples. Nobody has ever been able to achieve such a quality of counterfeit banknotes. In 1977, only an accident brought to the counterfeiter policemen. The meticulous cashier noticed a wave shift - the cliché was set backwards. The state machine flinched. An attempt was made on the holy of holies of any power - money!

The future counterfeiter took Mikhail Gorbachev

Victor's parents were officials in Moscow. When he was 16, the family moved to Stavropol. Here he attended art school and began to draw professionally. Thoughts about faking money in those years he did not arise. In the army, he was secretary of the Komsomol organization, after demobilization he worked as a driver in the Stavropol Krai Committee. A couple of times even Mikhail Gorbachev brought up.

A few years later, Baranov changed jobs - switched to a winery. They paid more.At the enterprise, he offered the management one of his first inventions - a foldable box. Using such boxes, it was possible to increase the load of the machine by 10 times. However, the chief engineer, patting the inventor on the shoulder, said: "Ivanovich, on x..you and I need this? .."

The release of the first banknote Baranov was preparing for 6 years

In the head of Viktor Ivanovich, ideas constantly swarmed, but a brilliant mind demanded a real business. And since Baranov read a lot, he knew that Soviet money was one of the steepest in protection levels and it was impossible to fake it ... But not Baranov. Talent application has been found!

To release his first bill, Baranov mastered 18 specialties. With 10 classes of education, he studied the entire world experience in printing, making paints and paper. According to the master, for nine years (!) He traveled to Moscow, where he did not get out of scientific libraries. There Victor studied books on chemistry and printing. Three and a half years from Baranov went to the development of their paper and technology of manufacturing watermarks. Another two and a half years, he gave the development of paints and cliches. As a result, Baranov managed to create his own composition for etching copper, with the help of which the matrix was made - the basis of the imprint of a future banknote. And instead of five o'clock, as at Goznak, the Baranovsky etching took two minutes!

All parts for numerous machine tools and machine tools Viktor Ivanovich ordered according to his drawings at various factories. Everyone said that they are needed for the production of jewelry. He collected all the machines in his barn on Zheleznodorozhnaya Street (now visitors of the Central Museum of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow are watching these curiosities).

First batch

The master brought the first batch of his masterpieces, seventy-fifty rubles notes, to Krasnodar, exchanged them and did not do them again. They were too simple to make. The most difficult in execution was a bill in denominations of 25 rubles. She became the top of the creation of Baranov ...

At that time, hundreds of artists, chemists, printers and photographers worked in the fifteen-storey building of the Goznak Research Institute. And then the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the KGB fell like snow on their heads to the printers — fake “quarters” began to walk around the country.

Experts who conducted a scientific examination of fakes, said that the creation of such technology in an artisanal way is impossible. The Interior Ministry investigators had two options: either a foreign power carries out financial sabotage, or the matrices and technologies were stolen from the factory of Goznak.

For a whole year there were inquiries on it - how and who managed to seize the matrices. The result is zero. Only a year later, experts erased the top layer of paint and found under it, on the bill, a small inappropriate stroke. The plant sighed with relief - the matrix is not ours! The version of the organs collapsed before our eyes. Then the embeds took over the regions.

He was detained with a suitcase of money

Gradually, the counterintelligence and the police came to the Stavropol Territory - it was here that the fake, and at the same time practically real, banknotes had the most circulation. Special outfits checked all, without exception, people who exchange twenty-five-ruble notes. All sellers of markets and shops were warned: in case of suspicion, contact the police.

On his fateful day, April 12, 1977, Viktor Ivanovich arrived in the city of Cherkessk with a whole suitcase of money. In the market, he offered an elderly Adyghea to exchange two twenty-five-ruble notes. Aksakal turned out to be vigilant and informed Baranov of the request to the police.

The protocol stated that the detained Viktor Baranov, a resident of the city of Stavropol, had with him a large amount of money in bills of 25 rubles each.

In the police, the detainee himself admitted to the pale investigator: “I am the one you are looking for!” Soon, an escort of five cars with the sirens and flashing lights turned on rushed towards Stavropol. And on the tables of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev and Minister of the Interior Shchelokov lay reports that the counterfeiter was caught.

At first, no one could believe that some self-taught artisan in the barn could make real money. On the investigative experiment in Stavropol met the highest ranks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. And only when the machine issued a twenty-five-ruble bill printed on ordinary paper, they finally believed it was him.

"Socially dangerous" genius planted for 12 years

In the Butyrka prison, the “Stavropol printer” was snapped up. A general from the Ministry of Internal Affairs came to him and took consultations. He brought a whole pile of counterfeit banknotes and asked how they were made and how to get on the trail of counterfeiters. However, these crude forgeries could not be compared with the Baranovsky works.

Most of all, the chief technologist of Goznak spoke with the master. It was to him that Baranov revealed the secret of copper etching and his “artisanal technology”.

Baranov answered the questions honestly and even offered his technologist a pencil design, the stroke of which would define a fake.He was told that there was a special machine and the state would somehow manage without his ideas (exactly three months later, the Americans released their similar definition pencil. - V.V.).

Conversations with the chief technologist ended in a resolution: "... very clever and very dangerous for society." A person who could replace an entire institute was not needed by science officials. The verdict was rendered: Viktor Ivanovich was given 12 years in prison.

On the king zone fakes almost killed

Once in the Pyatigorsk distributor, Baranov almost said goodbye to life. Here rules his wolfish law. For several days the master was beaten just like that, with nothing to do.

But seven years spent in the DIC of the city of Dimitrovgrad, in the Ulyanovsk region, Viktor Ivanovich remembers with pride. He pulled on all the artistic amateur. From the ideas of Baranov, the administration of ITK was delighted. At the performance, a giant drawn barge could float onto the stage, drawn by the prisoners of barge-huts behind the ropes, and behind the scenes the choir would draw out “Eh, dubinushka, let’s go!”.

After serving most of the term, Baranov was sent to a settlement in the Ural village of Kolva, near Solikamsk. Here he, too, never ceased to amaze people. The maestro drew a huge portrait of Lenin assembled from fragments. Each shield, and there were 18 of them, barely fit in his wretched little room. Residents of the village did not believe that when they assemble the “parts of the leader”, the mosaic will coincide. However, Ilyich coincided with millimeter accuracy! Soon a portrait of four by nine meters, which was visible for several kilometers, rose above Kolvoy.

Home affairs

Upon his return to Stavropol, Viktor Ivanovich organized his own firm. He began to produce women's perfumes and fragrances of linen from natural oils. However, when the market was filled with Chinese consumer goods, the work withered. Then he revealed to the world car refractory paint, which even in acid retained its color, but again Baranov’s ingenious inventions did not interest anyone ...

Knowing about the past of Baranov, he is occasionally asked to forge a seal or certificate. However, Baranov crippled him with crime. When I asked which modern banknotes are the most protected, he answered:

- All bills - our and shtatovskie - aerobatics! But everything that is created by man can be repeated by another person.
