The longest haired village in the world
Huanglu Yao Village hit the Guinness Book of Records as a town with the longest-haired women in the world. The average hair length is 1.9 meters, and the longest was 2.3 meters. It seems incredible in the modern world, but women cut their hair only once in their lives, when they turn 16 years old. It is believed that after this girl is ready to start a family.
Hair could be dismissed only in the presence of close relatives, but after 1987 women abandoned this tradition.
Previously, the tradition existed in a stricter form - no one except her husband and children had the right to see a woman without a headdress. If an outsider saw a woman with flowing hair, he had to live with her family as a son-in-law for three years.
Currently 120 women from Yao are proud to wear and show off their long hair. Thanks to the Guinness Book, their village is known in China and around the world as “the longest-haired”. It is believed that long hair brings longevity, wealth and luck to the family.
