What is blu-ray?

They can hold up to 500 GB of information. Such figures leave blu-ray out of competition with other formats. In order to use such a disk, a conventional disk drive is not enough. As a rule, specially designed drives are used to use Blu-ray format discs. They are much more powerful than usual, but they can work with other types of disks.
Blu-ray discs also exist in different sizes. Ordinary, that is 12 mm, and mini disks - 8 mm. You can use the mini discs to record a picture on an HD camcorder. They have a capacity of 14 to 15 GB.
As mentioned above, blu-ray discs usefor its recording a special blue laser, which operates at a wavelength of 405 nm. Conventional disks, such as DVD and CD, use red and infrared lasers. The length of their waves, respectively, 650 nm and 780 nm. Reducing the wavelength allowed to significantly reduce the density of data recording, that's the secret of the large amount of information that fits on a Blu-ray disc.

Where did the name of blu-ray disks come from? The name was taken from a special violet-bluish color laser, which is used to record or read data from a blu-ray disc. Blu is "blue" (in English "blue"), and ray is a ray. Why BLU without ending "e"? This is not accidental. The fact that the developers could not register the trademark Blue-ray, as there are a lot of such names. In this regard, it was decided that the future format of optical media will be called Blu-ray.
